Wake Me Up When September Ends

Tackle Q4 with ease by doing these 6 things.

Summer has come and passed,
The innocent can never last.

It's that time of year again: pumpkin spice, fall leaves, cooler weather (thank the lord), and, if you're in Florida, hurricane season. For many of us, the fall also brings a sense of impending doom surrounding the holidays. You know the drill—as the year comes to a close, your schedule gets increasingly busy with parties and events, family and friends coming into town, big meals and even bigger grocery budgets, and a constant acceleration of time between now and December 31.

When I was a teacher, it always felt like time was in fast-forward during the fall semester. One minute, it was the first day of school, and next thing I knew, it was time for winter concerts galore. Even if you aren’t a musician, we all know that feeling of rushing and giving everything we've got for the "last push" of 2025. Thankfully, we still have four months left of the year, so no need to panic, even when you see Christmas decorations in Home Goods (like I did the other day).

But, fall is coming, and this year September 1 falls on a Monday, offering the perfect opportunity to mentally reset and reengage as the heat of the summer wanes. Though any day can be a new start, when the calendar lines up just right, like starting a new month on a Monday, it just "feels" like a fresher start, and this mental trick can be used to get an extra boost in our reset.

Here are some ways you can make the most of the upcoming month:

1. Don’t bring old energy with you.

Whatever you've been putting off at the end of August, don't bring it with you into September. Put away the laundry you've been leaving in your hamper, clean up the kitchen, answer those emails, do a deep clean of a part of your house you've been neglecting; whatever you've been delaying for a while, get it off your to-do list and start the new month with a blank slate. Start with a fresh environment, fresh energy, and a renewed sense of purpose that isn't clouded by the things on your list you haven't done. Spend some time getting that list cleared out, or delete items that are distracting you.

2. Embrace new energy.

Buy something new, even if it is a little plant to put on your desk. Just as you cleared out the old energy of August, bring something new into your life that reminds you that every day is a fresh start.

  • A new coffee mug.

  • A picture to hang on your bulletin board.

  • A new book to read.

3. Set your Q4 intentions now.

Think back to your January resolutions and what may have been shifted to the back burner. Ask yourself:

  • How do I want to end 2025?

  • How do I want to begin 2026? (Do I really want to start 2026 like every other year, feeling so guilty that I feel like I have to become a brand new person on January 1?)

  • What am I worried about leading into the holidays and end of the year? What can I do to address those worries?

  • What did I say I was going to accomplish back in January that I haven't actually made progress towards?

4. Calendar block the rest of the year.

This isn't essential to do on September 1, but it's a good idea to use the lull of September to gear up for the last quarter of 2025. Pull out a calendar and start putting in the important information:

  • Dates you will be out of town

  • When family/friends will be visiting

  • Holiday events and gatherings

  • Deadlines for your last projects of the year

5. Write your "sub plans."

Teachers often pine that it is easier to show up to school sick than write lesson plans, which I can say from personal experience is true. You don’t have to be a teacher to understand that if you have a game plan before you inevitably get sick, it's a heck of a lot easier to call off without feeling guilty. The colder weather brings accompanying illness, especially for anyone with kids in the school system (they're gross). What's your plan for when you get sick? What measures can you be putting in place at your job now so that when you need to take a day off and rest you don't spend it panicking about the office crumbling?

6. Set your LGOTY.

That's just a silly, cheesy acronym for Last Goal of the Year (but it kind of has a catchy ring to it). If you could accomplish just one MAJOR task between now and the end of the year, what would it be? Maybe it's losing 20 lbs or finishing a project around the house; a big business goal or a trip you want to take. What is that one goal for 2025 that will leave you feeling satisfied and successful on December 31?

If you are looking at these questions and feeling overwhelmed, or if you want to spend these last few months of the year intentionally, I am excited to announce my first group mentorship program: No Resolutions Needed!
